Job Summary
The incumbent is responsible for consenting and data collection to facilitate clinical research in studying feasibility of performing opportunistic salpingectomy procedure at the time of colorectal surgery. The research assistant will support research activities through ethics applications, data collection, and data analysis.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Surgery educates students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of more than 600 physicians, surgeons, scientists and educators and over 70 administrative, research and technical staff, distributed across British Columbia. There are nine divisions in the following specialties: Cardiac Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The Department is also home to the Branch for Global Surgical Care (BGSC).
The research assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Heather Stuart. The research assistant will also receive guidance and direction from the Research Coordinator, and may collaborate with fellow Research Assistants and medical students in the Department of Surgery. They will work with the collaborating team at St. Paul’s Hospital as well.
WORK PERFORMED
- Pre-screen and consent patients who are eligible to participate in the study.
- Attend the OR when the surgeon is beginning fallopian tube removal and record the amount of time taken for both fallopian tubes to be removed or for the attempt to be abandoned.
- Further collect data from electronic medical record.
- Contributes to a respectful, inclusive working environment.
- Performs other responsibilities, as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The research assistant will work in an office environment at Diamonds Health Care Centre and there is the opportunity to work remotely.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/JUDGEMENT
The incumbent may have access to confidential data. Exercising poor judgment and lack of appropriate consultation with research team members and supervisors can adversely affect the viability and validity of research projects or programs, and may compromise the Division of General Surgery and the Department of Surgery’s ability to secure grant-based funding for future research projects.

- High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work independently.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.

- Previous experience with review of medical reports.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Intermediate level Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
