Ophthalmic Assistant +/- Technician Position and Surgical Coordinator
Position Description
Ophthalmologist seeking ophthalmic assistant +/- technician and surgical coordinator to join young dynamic team to provide tertiary and quaternary medical and surgical ophthalmology care to patients in hospital setting.
Position Responsibilities
Performs ophthalmic assistant +/- technician responsibilities: Ability to complete patient initial work-up including confirming identity, general history, medications, visual acuity, corneal pachymetry, autorefraction and possibly intraocular pressure.
Performs routine room tidying, cleaning and preparation: Wipes down the machines and other equipment after each patient. Sets up clinical rooms each morning and closes at end of day. Checks and ensures each room is adequately stocked with appropriate supplies. Orders and replenishes supplies, as per established schedule.
Performs basic patient reception and preparation responsibilities: Greet patients respectfully, pleasantly, professionally and be able to convey concern, and sympathy at all times. Maintains awareness of patients/visitors in reception areas and monitors waiting time to ensure patients/visitors experience prompt service. Directs patient to examination room or appropriate areas
Performs surgical coordination: Counsels patients with respect to diagnostic tests and implant options. Schedules surgeries for patients at two different surgical facilities. Maintains and supports surgical wait-lists. Coordinates with surgical facilities to book surgery based on available dates. Book surgical cases on surgical facilities online systems. Review medical charts to identify surgical requirements. Prepares paperwork including consents, surgical calculations, lens orders, surgical supplies and instructions for patients. Review surgical expectations with patients and families.
Performs clerical responsibilities (as needed): Checks-in and enters patient identifiers onto EMR. Checks-out patient from visit booking follow-up as needed including any patient directions. Interprets requisition, booking forms, orders/treatment prescriptions to generate an accurate appointment schedule following established guidelines. Maintains clinic bookings in EMR including blocking off schedules and rebooking patient appointments. Performs telephone responsibilities within scope of experience. Perform other related duties as required.
Position Required Work Experience +/- Education
Required: High school certificate
Preferred: Some post-secondary experience. Knowledge of medical terminology. Accredited Ophthalmic Technician Training Program or certification.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $18.00-$24.00 per hour
Expected hours: 37.5 per week
