Your Impact In This Role
As a Digital Collections Assistant, you will play a vital role in safeguarding Ontario’s historical heritage. Working closely with the Digital Collections Manager, you will assist in digitizing archival materials and preparing them for inclusion in our digital library. Your efforts will directly benefit individuals researching their roots and contribute to the preservation of irreplaceable genealogical resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Digital Collections Manager to evaluate, prioritize, and organize archival materials for digitization, ensuring the most at-risk collections are addressed first.
- Utilize advanced scanning equipment to create high-resolution digital images of documents, microfilms, and photographs.
- Perform detailed indexing of digitized materials to ensure their metadata adheres to archival standards, making them easily searchable for researchers.
- Prepare digitized files for upload to our secure cloud-based storage platform, ensuring proper organization and accessibility for OGS members.
- Handle fragile materials with care, adhering to established archival and preservation protocols to maintain their integrity.
- Assist with maintaining the organization’s digital library, identifying opportunities to enhance accessibility and user experience
What We’re Looking For
- Passion for History and Preservation: A strong interest in genealogy, historical research, or archival work is essential.
- Technical Proficiency: Experience with scanning equipment, digital file management, and basic image editing software is an asset.
- Detail-Oriented: You possess a sharp eye for accuracy and an unwavering commitment to quality.
- Self-Starter: You can work independently while adhering to project guidelines and deadlines.
- Team-Oriented: Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with the team.
- Educational Background: A background in archival studies, history, or library sciences is beneficial but not required.
