UBC Sauder’s Learning Services (LS) team supports faculty in the pursuit of teaching excellence with services and resources to facilitate the design, development and delivery of effective and engaging learning experiences in face-to-face, blended and online environments.
The Media Specialist is a member of the UBC Sauder Learning Services team and provides intermediate level production and post production services to all clients within UBC Sauder as requested. The Media Specialist produces high quality creative media assets and solutions for new or existing campus-wide initiatives, and helps in the development of digital media assets for use across all client stakeholder environments (funded and cost recovery).
The Media Specialist is expected to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Work Performed
- Develops and produces creative media assets based on the requirements and direction from the Production Manager, Academic Media Support.
- Participates in post-production activities, including but not limited to transcoding media, basic video editing, music research, outputting media, etc.
- On direction from more senior team members, packages in-house, custom, digital assets for production.
- Conducts testing on customized digital assets to ensure they meet specifications and makes suggestions to resolve issues.
- Coordinates and schedules the booking of studio space, set up of studio shoots, production equipment as well as all related resources and prepares related documents.
- Sets up and tears down equipment and the set both in studio and on location. Performs camera operation, and related tasks.
- Maintains business documents such as workflow and instructional manuals to ensure knowledge transfer amongst the team.
- Coordinates collection and drop-off of administrative resources as well as any additional equipment rented on a project basis. Inspects all equipment for proper functionality and wear and tear, managing overall equipment repair and inventory records.
- Triages client requests and escalates to other members of the Learning Services team as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the delivery and consumption of digital media resources by clients. Unreliable systems or poor project management could lead to missed contractual obligations for performance and availability which would damage the reputation of UBC Sauder. This could adversely impact the University community, including the stakeholders involved, which would result in possible lost productivity, funding and revenue.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline, and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Higher education in Film is an asset.
- Demonstrated entry level expertise in digital asset production (motion picture, motion graphics/after effects, visual effects, sound, etc.).
- Working knowledge of common production software including Adobe, etc.
- A specialty in one of the following areas: After Effects, Speed Grade, Photoshop and/or Illustrator is preferred.
- Knowledge of key industry standard pre-production, production and post-production processes and techniques such as planning/design, production, editing, finishing, quality assurance, etc.
- Knowledge of key industry standard post-production software such as Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Creative Suite, Avid, DaVinci, etc.
- Ability to operate industry standard equipment (e.g., cameras, lights, audio equipment, communications equipment and accessories) at an entry level.
- Knowledge of standard office software (Microsoft Office Word/Excel/PowerPoint, etc.).
- Customer service, project management and excellent organizational skills are required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Compensation Range
$4,567.04 - $5,385.67 CAD Monthly
