What You’ll Be Doing
Our Global Investment Banking group supports corporate, government and institutional clients with strategic advice, equity and debt fundraising, and corporate finance advisory services such as mergers and acquisitions. Our vision is to be the preferred capital markets banking partner to our clients, across multiple products and services.
The Toronto-based Global Technology & Innovation (“T&I”) Investment Banking office has deep sector expertise and proven execution capabilities combined with a full suite of capital market solutions, allowing our team to assist at every stage of our technology clients' business lifecycle. As a leader in this dynamic and rapidly changing industry, we pride ourselves on having advised, structured and financed many of the industry's most notable and complex transactions for Canada's leading technology participants, both private and public.
Our group focuses exclusively on technology and technology-enabled clients that operate in traditional sectors such as Enterprise Hardware and Software, SMB software, Business Services, Supply Chain Management, and Cloud Infrastructure, as well as emerging sectors including E-Commerce and Payments, Cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Educational Technology (EdTech).
Our ecosystem is fast changing and the successful applicant will help assist our clients in many capacities including initial public offerings (IPO), strategic mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and growth financings and/or public follow-on financings.
With guidance from Managing Directors or Executive Directors, you will complete assignments that impact the firm's bottom line through transaction and financing execution, client relationship support, industry and company research, and contributing to the overall communication flow across our global offices.
The role of an Associate is challenging and fast-paced. It requires dedication, passion for the industry and a very solid work ethic. You must be able to accept flexibility in required personal time commitments to complete work assignments.

How You’ll Succeed
- Industry research and analysis - Conduct industry research and analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities. Participate in cross functional teams and liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in executing mandates or preparing proposals for clients. Associates will be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to all the professionals within their group. Typically, Associates are assigned to a variety of transactions and advisory projects and must have strong prioritization and multi-tasking capabilities. Prepare industry and financial analysis to assist with the development of client recommendations. Lead industry comparable value and transaction precedent analyses.
- Client proposals - Play a key role in the preparation of client proposals and “pitchbooks” and the execution of client mandates by developing and auditing sophisticated financial models.
- Due Diligence - Assist in company due diligence investigations and in executing all facets of the group’s mandates.
- Technical knowledge - Take advantage of in depth technical and industry knowledge, as well as the geopolitical environment to generate transaction ideas/opportunities that can be discussed with the relevant relationship manager and deal/coverage teams.
- Relationship building – Grow your internal and external networks by participating in the following activities by coordinating client-focused and/or deal-focused “brainstorming” sessions with relevant team members and product specialists. Liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing proposals for clients. Developing relationships and actively communicate with various appropriate contacts at our clients. Developing and maintaining an internal network with product groups, other business groups, etc. Developing and maintaining an external network with the market (i.e. key stakeholders, prospects, etc.)
- Mentoring - Actively managing and mentoring the Analysts that work with you and providing regular feedback to them. Supporting CIBC’s image through involvement in community activities.
Who You Are
- You have completed relevant education. Finance, accounting, mathematics, computer science or economics undergraduate degree. Completion of CA or CFA is preferred and an MBA or Masters in Finance is an asset.
- You can demonstrate 2 to 4 years of industry experience in one or more of corporate finance, investment banking, private equity, project financing, and investment review. Experience must have included meaningful financial modeling and analysis.
- You have acquired the necessary financial skills. Excellent analytical ability including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices, including cash flow and returns analysis. Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations.
- You are technically savvy (Programs, Methodologies, Systems). Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (FactSet, Bloomberg) and other applicable software.
- You're motivated by collective success. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, and internal and/or external business partners. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets.
