Position Summary
Infection Control Practitioner Your goal in this position is to contribute to the development, co-ordination, implementation and effective operation of the Infection Prevention and Control Program of North York General Hospital. You will be teaching and reinforcing infection control policies and procedures to all levels of health care providers and providing consultation to all in-hospital departments and committees and external agencies on matters related to infection control. You will be also facilitating inter and intra departmental relationships through effective communication with all levels of hospital staff and you also have the ability to work independently. You possess knowledge of microbiology and current practical and academic knowledge of infection control practices. You have the ability to plan, organize and direct a hospital-wide program. You have also the ability in teaching and program design. You have proven microcomputer skills. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.
On a practical level, you will
- Contribute to the development of, support and adhere to North York General Hospital philosophy, standards, policies, and procedures
- Work with the interdisciplinary health care team to facilitate the reduction of nosocomial infections
- Liaison to the City of Toronto Public Health Department for the reporting of communicable diseases as required by the Health Protection and Promotion Act
- Perform surveillance through monitoring, analyzing, and reporting of nosocomial infections on a quarterly basis
- Actively participate on the Infection Prevention and Control Committee
- Provide education to staff, students and volunteers in all disciplines proactively and as requested
- Be responsible for outbreak management
- Maintain active involvement in construction design and activities by recommending environmental controls to reduce the risk of construction related nosocomial infections. Performs periodic inspections on construction activities to ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures
- Assume responsibility for own performance and continuing education to maintain clinical competency
- Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Standards
Qualifications
- University preparation at the Baccalaureate or Masters level in a health related discipline or recognized equivalent (current registration as a nurse or medical laboratory technologist)
- Completion (or willing to) of an IPAC-Canada endorsed Infection Control course
- Certification in infection control (CIC) preferred
- Infection control experience preferred
- Bilingualism in French/English an asset

This is a Full Time Permanent position, 8 hours, Day shifts, including weekends, and on-call.
