Job Description
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is seeking a full-time, permanent Extern Mentor Coordinator - Nurse Educator. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced registered nurse to provide leadership and be responsible for supporting Clinical Externs’ practice and integration into the clinical areas according to CAMH’s policies and in collaboration with teams.
The Extern Mentor Coordinator-Nurse Educator will report to the Manager, Nursing Innovation & Transition Programs, and will support Clinical Externs to practice safely and effectively as unregulated care providers. The Extern Mentor Coordinator-Nurse Educator will work in collaboration with the Professional Practice Office, Human Resources, Clinical Managers, other Nurse Educators and clinical teams.
The Extern Mentor Coordinator-Nurse Educator will also support the planning, education, and integration of Clinical Externs by:
- Contributing to their onboarding and the clinical extern interview process
- Creating, adapting and delivering orientation and learning resources in collaboration with the rest of the Nurse Educator team
- Assisting Clinical Externs to become familiar with their roles and responsibilities in their area of clinical practice (e.g. unit)
- Supporting the transition of clinical externs into nursing roles, where applicable
- Acting as a resource to clinical teams with understanding and implementing this guideline
- Keeping a record of required Clinical Extern competency attainment
- Providing on-going coaching and mentoring to Clinical Externs
- Identifying resources and opportunities for learning/professional development
- Contributing and participating in the evaluation of the Clinical Externs role
- Serving as a liaison and conduit between the Unit/Program leadership and Professional Practice leadership
This position will work days, evenings and on weekends as appropriate. This position is located at 100 Stokes Street.
Job Requirements
The successful candidate must be registered in good standing as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario and possess a current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate. Two years of experience working in the mental health and addictions field with excellent clinical skills and competencies is essential. Previous teaching experience working with learners, and/or preceptorship, previous experience as a Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor is preferred. The successful candidate would have demonstrated leadership, change management, problem solving skills and excellent communication skills.
