Job Summary
The Bridge Engineer, Design and Construction is responsible for the review of designs and leading projects assigned to consultants or contractors. The role ensures that projects are in accordance with internal CN policies and American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way Association (AREMA) guidelines. The position is considered a technical role and requires self-sufficient competencies in structural engineering principles and mastery of Company policies.
Main Responsibilities
Design and Project Management
- Coordinate consultant design assignments
- Review railway bridge designs and associated track projects
- Handle detailed designs and construction process of highway and railway bridge structures in concrete, steel, and timber
- Provide costing information and resolve queries during bridge construction
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and project schedules for projects to minimize costs and disruptions to railway operations
- Provide engineering support and training to staff members and field forces during construction
- Review preparation of fabrication specifications and tender documents
- Handle and track outsourced service contracts, reviews, and processes services invoicing
- Coordinate with CN departments for approvals and work windows to achieve the program requirements
- Review and respond to submittals and correspondence from internal and external stakeholders to protect CN's interests when local, municipal, provincial, and federal projects affect the organization's property
Safety
- Verify and ensure compliance of work or actions prescribed in engineering drawings and specifications
- Participate in construction safety audits
- Investigate site safety requirements and ensure compliance
Training and Development
- Participate in field visits to familiarize with the network and plant inventory in conjunction with field inspections, safety blitz, construction work blocks, or reconnaissance trips
- Ensure compliance with bridge management plan policies and practices
- Ensure proper adherence to requirements for maintaining licensure as a P. Eng.
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular work week from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires minimal travel (10%) with overnight stays within the region. The role is partially performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions. The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences.

Experience
Engineering
- Minimum 3 years of General Engineering experience including 2 years in bridge design with a railway company, engineering consulting firm or research facility
o Experience with AREMA guidelines for railway structures or other North American structural design codes
Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
- Professional Engineer Licence (PE or P. Eng.)
- Valid Driver's Licence
- Capability to be certified in the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)
- Designation as a Railroad Bridge Engineer*
- Master's Degree in Civil Engineering*
- Specialization in Structural Engineering*
- Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

- Knowledge of Fall Protection
- Familiarity with CN Bridge standards and techniques*
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (MathCAD, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project)*
- Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
