Date Posted: 10/29/2024
Req ID: 40438
Faculty/Division: UofT Scarborough

Calendar Description: Research and practice in the sciences often rests on the unquestioned assertion of impartial analyses of facts. This course will take a data-informed approach to understanding how human biases can, and have, affected progress in the sciences in general, and in biology in particular. Case studies may include reviews of how science has been used to justify or sustain racism, colonialism, slavery, and the exploitation of marginalized groups. Links will be drawn to contemporary societal challenges and practices. Topics will include how biases can shape science in terms of those doing the research, the questions under study, and the types of knowledge that inform practice and teaching. Data on bias and societal costs of bias will be reviewed, as well as evidence-informed practices, structures, and individual actions which could ensure that science disrupts, rather than enables, social inequities.
Qualifications Includes: Includes: ability, academic qualifications, suitability for the position and appropriate background in the subject/specialty. Strong background in principles of equity, diversity and inclusion as it applies to the sciences (for example, from previous coursework, committee work, or volunteer activities), and a strong background in biology is required.
Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.
Duties for the position may vary and include: preparation for classes, conducting tutorials with breakout groups, office hours, invigilating and marking, managing in-person discussions, and moderating an online discussion board. Specific duties are defined by the instructor in charge of the course. Please note duties are performed in person at the UTSC campus.
