Performance is reviewed by a superior for technical adequacy, conformance to established practices and ability to meet time schedules.Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Observe and record refrigeration plant readings and plant checks regularly and report any problems.
- Cleaning ice with ice resurfacer and routine ice maintenance, including maintaining ice thickness, edging and spudding.
- Minor rink board and gate repairs; advertising installation.
- Perform janitorial duties such as rink/lobby glass, cleaning and disinfecting of change rooms, showers, washrooms; mop and sweep, vacuum, disinfect, and garbage removal.
- Various maintenance duties such as changing lamps, minor plumbing repairs on sinks, toilets and showers,
- Perform a variety of equipment and preventative maintenance duties, including operation and equipment maintenance duties such as changing resurfacer blades.
- Safety inspection of ice surface, rink boards, shielding and protective netting.
- Installation of ice and sport markings and removal of ice for dry floor use.
- May be required to train and mentor staff.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in ice-making and refrigeration operations.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, tools and equipment used in janitorial and building maintenance work.
- Knowledge of and ability to resurface ice, change blades, and maintain resurfacer.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow SDS (Safety Data Sheets).
- Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work.
- Ability to use and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (including wearing a properly fitted respirator).
- Ability to enforce rules and regulations governing the operation of the arena during public session, user groups, adult groups and organization sessions.
- Ability to learn and perform new processes and procedures to maintain operating standards as the Arena industry changes.
- Ability to operate ice-making, refrigeration, and resurfacing equipment.
- Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled building maintenance, and minor repair tasks and to perform routine janitorial duties.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision on an assigned shift.
- Ability to establish and maintain outstanding customer service experience and effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external staff, public and contractors.
- Ability to courteously and effectively communicate with patrons.
- Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with groups and individuals to ensure observance of facility rules and regulations.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement and action in accordance with established practices and procedures.
- Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent with a minimum of 1 year of experience in an Arena supplemented by courses in ice-making and refrigeration; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licences, Certificates and Registrations
- Ice Facility Operator (I.F.O.) Certification or higher is required at time of hire.
- Refrigeration Operator (R.O.) Certification or higher preferred to be obtained within one (1) year from the date of hire for Full-Time positions.
- Current First Aid Certificate including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) and maintaining of certificate.
- WHMIS training is required for the positions and will be provided to all staff.
- Driver’s License as required by the British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act.
Preferred Qualifications
- Refrigeration Operator (R.O.) Certification or 4th Class Power Engineer Certification
- Experience working as a Building Service or Building Maintenance Worker supplemented by a Building Service Worker Certificate.
Working Conditions and Effort:Work is performed in an Arena/Ice Rink facility. Regular light physical effort and operation of a mechanical equipment such as an ice resurfacer is required.
