Position Summary
BCIT’s
School of Transportation is seeking a
regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Toolroom Attendant. Operating in a quality assurance environment this position provides assistance to instructors and students of the Heavy Equipment Group by performing the duties related to the tool room such as: issuing and receiving consumables, tools and training materials; carry out minor repairs on tools and equipment; preparing purchase requisitions; monitoring and maintaining tool inventory; and workshop supplies and consumable costs for the Heavy Equipment Group; and to maintain a high customer service standard, cleanliness and organization of the tool room and workshops.

Duties & Responsibilities
Duties And Responsibilities
Maintaining toolroom:
- Assembles, issues, records and checks in tool boxes, tools and equipment
- Monitors damage or loss of tools and equipment and reports to Department Head and/or Administrative Manager
- Contacts borrowers regarding overdue, missing or damaged items, and advise of options for replacement
- Performs minor repairs on damaged tools and equipment
- Prepares paperwork for sending tools and equipment out for major repairs
- Issues and receives learning materials (i.e. audio visual and print)
- Ensures cleanliness of toolroom and workshop areas
- Maintain content of the Just In Time (JIT) bins
Maintaining Inventory
- Records tool and equipment inventory on computerized database system
- Monitors tool room supplies and consumables and reports to Department Head and/or Administrative Manager
- Sources parts/components for the purpose of repairing workshop vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Receives parts and supplies purchased through Standing Purchase Orders and various vendors
- Checks incoming orders for correctness and places items received into inventory, notifying Department Head and/or Administrative Manager of any discrepancies, and filing related documents
- Maintains vehicle manuals, log books and keys
- Maintain inventory of JIT bins
- Track consumable usage per course
Other Duties And Responsibilities
- Complies with the School quality assurance procedures
- Issues shop work orders and files completed work orders
- Answers telephone in toolroom, responds to queries and relays messages
- Ensures that all goods are labelled according to current MSDS (Material Safety Data System) information.
- Ensures that the MSDS database is updated with current information data
- Coordinating pick-up and delivery of various tools, parts and components.
- Delivers parts to appropriate workshop, students or instructor
- Monitors, maintains and coordinates pick up of recycled oil, antifreeze and other waste materials
- Operating forklift for moving equipment, loading and unloading trucks as required
- Filling propane cylinder’s for forklifts
- Monitors toolroom and workshop floors for safety concerns
- Ensures security of Department (Workshop and Tool Room)
- Performs scheduled maintenance inspections of workshop equipment
- Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP)
- Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications
Qualifications

Education
Education:
- Grade 12, plus completion of specialized and relevant post-secondary education/ training of up to 6 months in duration, such as entry level trades training or foundation program.
License(s)/Certifications(s)
- Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license, forklift license, WHMIS and HRAI refrigerant handling certification (or ability/willingness to obtain).
Experience
- Two years of general experience in a mechanical shop environment, plus one year of practical, current experience in a position of similar responsibility including customer service, inventory control, parts and equipment sourcing, costing, purchasing and equipment maintenance and repair and operation of basic equipment such as forklifts and shop cranes.
Software/Computer Application(s) And Expertise
- Demonstrated ability using Microsoft Word and Excel.

- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with the proven ability to communicate effectively with students, customers, and staff at all levels of an organization.
Administrative Skills (e.g. Prioritizing)
- Must possess superior organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and make decisions within scope of duties and responsibilities.
Other Skills/Abilities
- Ability to guide students to the correct tooling and explain the safe usage of that tool.
- Demonstrated exceptional customer service skills.
- Proven ability to work both independently and as a team member.
