This job posting represents multiple positions within different ministries and at various locations across Ontario. Certain cities may be located in distant or remote areas in Ontario and may not be accessible by public transit. Work Description
As an Engineering Assistant, you may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:
- Compile, organize, and analyze existing data from a variety of sources.
- Collect and analyze data from records and reports, as well as from field visits.
- Record data in spreadsheets and databases, analyze data for trends and patterns, organize data into tables and graphs, prepare reports, and make recommendations based on analysis of data.
- Compile annual summaries and recommendations.
- Review records/field information of operational facilities.
- Review requirements, codes, or standards used in other jurisdictions as information for revisions to Operating Standards, regulations and other legislation.
- Develop training.
- Provide customer service assistance by responding to clients, staff, and the public to address their needs.
- Conduct internet searches and data analysis using maps and statistical information.
- Conduct research and prepare draft papers.
Note: This position requires lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):
- Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
- Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.
- Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
- Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) for the full duration of your summer employment.

- You apply your written communication skills to document findings, record data, and prepare and maintain a variety of documents (e.g. reports, presentations, meeting minutes, etc.).
- You apply your customer service skills and your verbal, written, and active communication skills to respond to phone, email, and in-person inquiries and provide information to internal clients and/or the public.
- You apply your initiative and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within a team environment and participate in meetings.
- You apply your experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word (word processing) and Excel (spreadsheets), as well as databases, email, and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
- You apply your engineering knowledge and experience by performing research and data compilation, including assembling information from hardcopy and digital sources, performing data entry, and preparing geological material for sampling and analysis.
- You may apply your engineering knowledge and technical skills to assist the engineering staff at the Petroleum Resources Section.
- You apply your planning, organizational, coordination, and time management skills to assist with daily work assignments and manage a varied work schedule with deadlines.
- You apply your administration skills to organize administrative and office work tasks (e.g. assembling information from hardcopy and digital sources, performing data entry, preparing analyses, and providing recommendations in report format, etc.).
- You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize, and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines.
- You are able to work in an outdoor environment with some physical activity involved, including lifting and carrying weighted items in accordance with the Employment Standards Act and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
- You are willing to travel with engineering or inspection staff on field visits to evaluate petroleum operations.
