Outpatient Psychiatry: Day Hospital Program - Child and Youth Counselor
SickKids serves a diverse population of patients and families dealing with acute, complex, and specialized physical and mental health disorders. Over the past several years, there has been a significant increase in volumes noted in paediatric mental health across inpatient, outpatient and emergency services. In response to this growing need, SickKids is embarking on an ambitious and exciting plan to develop and expand our mental health services, resulting in significant positive impacts to the Department of Psychiatry.
We are currently looking for two Child & Youth Counsellors to provide direct care to children/ youth as part of the Psychiatry Day Hospital team. The Day Hospital is a voluntary intensive mental health treatment program for youth ages 13 to 17 years old who are experiencing early onset mental health symptoms. The goal of the 12-week program is to help youth improve their experiences, symptoms and level of functioning through group, individual, and family therapy.
Here's What You'll Get To Do:
- Work directly with youth 13-17 years
- Develop and implement a plan of care in collaboration with the child/family and the multidisciplinary team.
- Provide supervision and support to patients experiencing acute mental health issues.
- Assist patients with the development of treatment goals.
- Work with the patients to acknowledge successes and strategies to support their efforts as they transition to the community.
- Liaise with community agencies, such as school boards and community mental health agencies to ensure collaboration in patient care.
- Participate in transition preparation with the child and family.
- Work collaboratively with the TDSB teaching staff to develop academic goals for patients.
- Develop creative content for group facilitation.
- Participate in design of treatment groups.
- Participate in multidisciplinary service rounds and team meetings.
Here's What You'll Need:
- Certified Child and Youth Counsellor Diploma from a community college with a Baccalaureate degree in a related field preferred.
- Professional member of the Ontario Association Of Child and Youth Counsellors (OACYC) is preferred.
- Broad experience in mental health services for children and adolescents is required.
- Experience with adolescents living with mental health conditions, specifically psychotic disorders and mood disorders.
- Knowledge of school systems and processes an asset.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team and to take initiative when appropriate.
- Strong ability to lead and facilitate group process.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to utilize critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity & inclusion.
- Certification in CBT or DBT an asset
- Knowledge and experience in delivering CBT & DBT content an asset
Employment Type:
Full time, 1 year contract (37.5 hours/week) position
Applicants must be able to work on site, Monday to Friday from 8:00-16:00, however hours are subject to change depending on program needs.
