Provides engineering expertise for the investigation and assessment of the condition of the subway, track network, and develop solutions to ensure safe, reliable and efficient track systems that are in compliance with established maintenance standards; performs design reviews of existing track and track components, designing, re-engineering track components and systems, developing technical specifications for track components, system and track related construction projects, conducting condition surveys, diagnosing site conditions and providing root cause assessments.
This involves:
- Planning, scheduling and producing detailed design work to ensure procurement and delivery of materials for programmed track work rehabilitation;
- Ensuring distribution of preliminary and final design drawings for subway track work programs to meet construction schedules;
- Determining existing field conditions, reviewing total station survey data, existing drawings, specifications and obtaining additional data for the preparation of engineering drawings;
- Developing conceptual, preliminary and final detail drawings of track work systems and their components utilizing existing standards and new design concepts, including complex special trackwork;
- Coordinating draft persons and assigned design staff in the preparation of technical data, estimates, drawings and specifications;
- Providing design support for the development and selection of design concepts, analysis of technical data, and production of design information related to track system design projects;
- Analyzing technical data, and preparing technical drawings and specifications relevant to the design, procurement, construction and maintenance of subway track;
- Developing technical specifications for the supply of track components, system and track related construction projects;
- Undertaking studies of track maintenance and suggesting methods for improving performance or reducing cost;
- Undertaking studies of problem areas to determine root cause with recommendations for corrective action;
- Developing reports relating to design options, maintenance issues and project estimates;
- Analyzing and evaluating tenders submitted by suppliers and making recommendations for award;
- Reviewing shop drawings, inspection and approval of track materials.

- Demonstrate specialized expertise and knowledge in the assigned field
- You are a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario;
- Your educational background in mechanical engineering plus several years of experience would be integral to your success in the role;
- Your knowledge in the track or roadway design field where specialized techniques are learned and where knowledge of American Railway Engineering Maintenance Association (A.R.E.M.A.) requirements and industry standards and procedures are important;
- Must possess a valid class “G” Province of Ontario Driver’s License; the successful candidate may be required to operate their personal automobile to inspect work sites/locations;
- Your application demonstrates sound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, methods and practices;
- You are proficient in the use of MS Office applications, including computer aided drawing and design using MicroStation and Solidworks;
- You must possess sound judgment with a strong mathematical and analytical background, and thorough knowledge of the mechanical design discipline;
- Being familiar with principles associated with design, analysis and maintenance of railways and/or roadways would be an asset;
- You must also have the ability to carry out detailed design analysis, technical feasibility and constructability studies; evaluate alternative proposals; and assess construction impacts;
- You must be familiar with and able to use various engineering software and data base packages to analyze information and develop trends, statistical profiles and economic comparisons.
