Role and Opportunity
The successful applicant will participate in early-stage assessment and development of new utility-scale solar and battery projects, as well as in policy and market research. They will interface with external stakeholders such as service providers, equipment manufacturers, local utility companies, municipal governments, and government agencies.
This position provides the successful candidate with an excellent opportunity to participate in the fast-growing renewable energy industry, working with a well-established organization on international projects. The role is for a full-time permanent position, starting as soon as possible, and no later than January 13th, 2025
Responsibilities
- Draft and modify basic engineering drawings including site layouts using CAD tools and other specialized software.
- Visit prospective sites to assess project constructability and construction risks.
- Compile and manage maps, site boundaries, and aerial imagery using Google Earth Pro or other GIS tools.
- Review third-party topographical, geotechnical, hydrological, and zoning studies to assess project viability.
- Conduct solar resource studies and project performance forecasts using PVSyst and other forecasting tools.
- Support discussions with major equipment suppliers to select and cost of major system components such as transformers, inverters, batteries, trackers, and solar modules.
- Manage and oversee work by third-party technical service providers.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team to advance projects through the development process until they are ready-to-build.
- Support entry into new markets including policy and market research and project-specific diligence.
- Research and summarize relevant federal, regional, and municipal laws, regulations and permits, especially as they relate to construction projects.
Reporting Relationships
The Project Development Analyst will be employed by CarbonFree and will report directly to CarbonFree's Vice President of Engineering and Special Projects.
Location and Travel
The Project Development Analyst will be based at CarbonFree’s headquarters in midtown Toronto at Yonge & St Clair. They may be required to travel occasionally for stakeholder meetings, or to visit prospective project sites within Canada or in Latin America.

Education Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field with some industry experience is required. Candidates with an associate degree or a technical diploma in a related field may be considered so long as they have considerable experience or training in commercial or utility-scale PV system design, development, or construction.
Professional Qualifications
- 2D Computer aided design experience and competence.
- Strong command of written and spoken English and Spanish is essential.
- A basic understanding of solar system design, including the proper usage of basic components and installation methods.
- Strong technical aptitude, including a basic understanding of mathematical modelling. Ability to read engineering drawings.
- Strong computer skills, including the ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Ability to work and excel in a fast-paced, highly entrepreneurial environment and to perform multiple roles and functions simultaneously.
- Project management experience or certifications, and knowledge of energy markets are an asset but not a requirement
- Valid Canadian driver’s license.
Personal Qualifications
- An energetic, highly motivated, self-starter who is willing to roll up their sleeves.
- An excellent time manager, able to balance multiple projects and prioritize a broad variety of issues, initiatives and objectives concurrently.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong ability to explain complex technical topics and systems.
