Program/Unit Summary
Within our Neuro/MSK program, 3 distinctive units are home to one of Canada’s most comprehensive multidisciplinary teams that provides exceptional, patient-centred care to patients who have been diagnosed with brain tumours, subdural hematoma, subarachnoid hemorrhage, arterial venous malformations and spinal surgery patients.
4J Neurosurgery, a 14-bed unit, is a Regional Centre for Neurosurgery.
3J Neurosurgery Special Care Unit is an 8-bed unit provides high observation to Neurosurgery patients post-operatively and patients with higher care needs than can be managed on a ward level.
4J Surgical Spine is a 16 bed unit that provides acute care to patients before and after spinal surgery. As a part of an academic centre, our Neuro team participates in ongoing research, quality improvement and professional development initiatives and the daily, life-saving work offers a wealth of unmatched learning opportunities.
Position Summary
- The Physician Assistant is a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program and is certified by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada. New graduates of the PA program are encouraged to apply.
- The neurosurgical services are provided at the Mississauga Hospital location of THP. The PA works closely with the neurosurgeons supporting patient care on the inpatient unit.
- This position reports to the Director, Neuro/MSK program and to the Head of the Division of Neurosurgery for medical performance and works under the direction of the supervising Neurosurgeon.
Key Responsibilities
- Performing comprehensive and problem-focused histories, physical examinations, patient screening, and appropriate laboratory and diagnostic studies.
- Conducting daily hospital rounds, evaluating post-operative patients, assisting with discharge planning, and facilitating patient referral to the appropriate physician or agency.
- Conducting routine follow-up visits with patients, returning phone calls from patients, and managing prescription refills.
- Performing minor procedures on the unit after a skills assessment and satisfactory performance evaluation. These procedures will be initiated under a direct order or medical directive by a supervising surgeon.
- Upon completion of formal and informal education and documented competency, prescribing/ordering specific medications, but not narcotics, as delegated by the supervising physician.
- Working collaboratively with an inter-professional team, including but not limited to surgeons, interventional radiology, residents/interns/medical students, nurse practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals, and laboratory personnel.
