Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the Emergency Department Manager, the Clerical Assistant will be responsible for performing a broad range of administrative, secretarial, word processing and business support services for a patient care unit. As a highly organized, self-motivated, results-oriented individual, you will be accountable for:
- Providing administrative and secretarial support to the Clinical Leader/Manager as well as other members of the patient care team;
- Scheduling patient procedures as well as outpatient follow-ups using state-of-the-art computer software;
- Liaising with various hospital departments such as payroll, purchasing, etc. to exchange information and to resolve issues;
- Utilizing computer equipment and various software packages, i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, etc. to generate a variety of correspondence, reports and documentation;
- Operating multi-line telephones, greeting and receiving visitors (patients, families, etc.) and responding to inquiries including patient safety concerns and taking appropriate corrective action;
- Ordering supplies and equipment as needed by the Emergency Department;
- Collecting unit statistics as required.
Qualifications
- Previous clerical experience in an Emergency Department in the last 12 months preferred.
- Demonstrated oral English language skills to communicate with patients and team members with the ability to operate multi-line telephones, respond to inquiries and redirect calls as appropriate.
- Good written communication (English) skills, schedule patient procedures and obtain test results.
- Must have medical terminology certificate or evidence of pursuit.
- Ability to operate state-of-the-art computer technology with a proven aptitude and willingness for learning higher level computer skills.
- Well-developed organizational skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks appropriately.
- Excellent customer service record with proven success working as part of a team. Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the mission and values of St. Michael's Hospital.
- Must have an acceptable attendance record.
- Must be available to work days, evening, night, weekends and/or statutory holiday shifts
- Will be required to work these shifts on a rotational basis as per the specific needs of the department.
