Job Summary: To provide technical support and assist in data cleaning, manipulation, analysis, and visualization on data to deliver insights and contribute to evidence informed decision making and solutions.
Major Responsibilities
- Provides technical support and assists with performing data cleaning, manipulation, analysis, and visualization on data to deliver insights and contribute to evidence informed decision making and solutions.
- Contributes to the development of corporate analysis models, dashboards, and databases.
- Sets up data queries, builds Extract, Transform and Load (ETLs), data pipelines and automates recurring analysis, and builds reusable scripts to speed up future analysis.
- Provides technical expertise using data analysis techniques to City divisions in support of data driven decision making.
- Uses data science to formulate solutions and/or recommendations.
- Connects a variety of business data with location information and analyzes data to gain additional insights.
- Ensures data quality, identifies errors and performs data cleaning to ensure accuracy and statistical significance.
- Builds out data visualization to inform decision-making or to contribute towards briefing decks.
- Uses statistical analysis techniques (e.g. A/B testing, summary statistics on central tendency, etc.) to ensure high quality analysis.
- Guides stakeholders to understand the analytics tools and automated dashboards to support decision making.
- Implements changes to existing data measures based on analysis of historical data.
- Produces data visualization on a range of different data sources, including structured, unstructured, real-time, and geospatial.
- Tracks and maintains Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and business impacts.
- Updates KPI decks on a regular basis to outline major changes, annotates major research projects, and changes to the system that have impact to KPIs.
- Troubleshoots and takes action to resolve issues associated to data, interpretation, and reporting.
- Performs research on best practices related to data analysis and data visualization.
- Communicates analysis results to internal and external stakeholders.
- Compiles data/statistical reports based on data analysis including formatting for aesthetics and structure.
- Maintains data and records in accordance with Information Management best practices and guidelines.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of both current and emerging data analytics and products.
- Develops, fosters, and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Builds relationships with key business users and decision makers to understand their business analytics needs.
- Trains team members and other stakeholders on foundational analytics capabilities. Gives presentations at relevant learning networks, meetings and events related to findings and data science.
Key Qualifications
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline (e.g. Data Analytics/Science, Statistics, GIS/Geomatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Economics) or equivalent combination of education and experience, or a related field.
- Experience with statistical computing, object-oriented programming, and database query languages (for example Python, SAS, SQL, R).
- Experience using statistical techniques (e.g. predictive value, time-series analysis, regression, A/B testing, Bayesian).
- Experience with data visualization (for example Tableau, ArcGIS, R Shiny, Illustrator and other open-source data visualization tools).
- Experience with metadata management, data lineage tracing and version control.
You Must Also Have
- Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret large volumes of data.
- Ability to design and create user-friendly dashboards for various stakeholders using industry-standard BI software (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, Excel).
- Excellent political acuity with consideration of context and timing.
- Ability to create and effectively present information (data storytelling).
- Can effectively facilitate discussions with various audiences and collect business requirements.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; with the ability to develop and maintain inter-professional team relationships with multiple stakeholders, including City staff and the public.
- Ability to work and problem-solve independently. Collaborative attitude, willingness to work with team members.
- Detail-oriented, dependable, and flexible individual with initiative to handle a complexity of tasks simultaneously.
- Excellent critical thinking, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills. Ability to travel to various locations.
- Skills related to querying relational database environments (e.g. Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, Postgres).
- Familiarity with code management tools (e.g. git).
- Must be familiar with and comply with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations for the safe performance of his/her duties and responsibilities, or capable of obtaining familiarity with same.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.
