Position: Research Technologist in Childhood Cancer Genomics Program
Location: Toronto, Ontario CANADA
Employment Type: Full-time, 1 Year Contract 1.0 FTE
As part of an institution-wide Precision Child Health program, SickKids is transforming care for children with cancer by incorporating real-time whole genome and transcriptome sequencing tests. We are recruiting for a motivated Research Technologist (level 2) to help run the laboratory experiments needed to support our research. The position is ideal for someone who wants to develop new skills and can positively contribute to a fun group that is working on the cutting-edge of childhood cancer research.
Here¿s What You¿ll Get To Do
- Help develop novel next generation sequencing (NGS) methods (e.g., for sequencing circulating nucleic acids from children with cancer)
- Organize and maintain sample log for valuable research specimens
- Track and process scheduled prospective patient samples
- Be responsible for the organization of a project or the laboratory on a daily basis, alone and with other employees
- Perform a variety of technical assignments under general supervision including but not limited to whole blood processing, DNA/RNA extraction, tissue culture, NGS library preparation, PCR, and qPCR
- Occasionally modify procedures and design or create new procedures
- Order laboratory supplies and equipment
- Take considerable responsibility for day-to-day running of lab and/or special projects
- Exercise moderate independent judgment and decision-making using established policies and procedures to resolve technical problems
- Follow established guidelines, procedures and standards
- May provide functional supervision to junior lab staff
- May be responsible for procedures performed by fellows, students or employees in the lab
- Develop knowledge of the fields of precision medicine and pediatric cancer by participating in discussions with the team and reviewing the relevant scientific literature
Here¿s What You¿ll Need
- Bachelor of Science degree
- Two years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated competency in written and verbal communications
- A commitment to understanding and aiding in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion objectives
This Will Make You Extra Competitive
- Graduate degree with knowledge of molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, NGS)
- Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills
- Knowledge and prior hands-on experience with DNA and RNA library preparation and the execution of NGS workflows
- Prior experience working with automated liquid handlers
