Major Responsibilities:
- Provides information and counselling to individuals and refers to community resource agencies regarding sexual health, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STI’s), hepatitis, birth control options (i.e. abortion, counselling), emergency contraception, sexual orientation and harm reduction in injection drug use (i.e. safe injections).
- Assists clients in problem solving and decision making.
- Promotes and provides information on available programs, risks and support agencies.
- Participates in staff meetings, training, in-service seminars, work groups and community meetings. Takes part in research projects and assists or sits on committees as a resource.
- Monitors current community demographic data and service availability.
- Develops, maintains and updates a province-wide manual of resources/services, agencies and health care professionals specific to each community in Ontario.
- Participates in community outreach and education programs such as Health Fairs, Gay Pride Day. Sets up booths in different settings and speaks to community groups.
Key Qualifications
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Experience with the provision of sexual health and harm reduction counselling and education.
- Experience working with HIV/AIDS, STI prevention programs or sexual health promotion programs.
- Degree/Diploma in Nursing, Health Sciences, Social Sciences or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Verbal fluency in French at a professional level, ability to speak additional languages would be an asset.
- Computer proficient, ability to utilize a variety of software packages and database applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, COMM100 e-chat platform, Bloomfire Knowledge Base).
You must also have:
- Thorough knowledge of HIV/AIDS, STI and Hepatitis including transmission, prevention and treatment options.
- Awareness of issues relating to diversity, access and equity and their impacts on sexual health.
- Ability to deal with sensitive topics that are highly controversial and political.
- Ability to conduct work in a non-judgmental way, using a harm reduction approach.
- Commitment to ongoing learning, development, and knowledge transfer.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain good public relations.
- Proven ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness & ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, and weekends.
