Position Overview
The Junior Buyer is responsible for facilitating the effective ordering of products and services and for ensuring the supply commitments and business needs are met. In additional, the Junior Buyer supports a variety of employees within the organization to clarify needs, evaluate and or determine suppliers, place orders and sustain ongoing and successful supplier interactions.
Key Responsibilities
Inventory (20%):
- Utilizes KAN-BAN Operating Systems to assist in monitoring stock levels and identify purchasing needs for plant consumables, safety, office and departmental supplies
- Coordinates with Receiver to ensure all products arrive in good condition
- Participates in monthly physical cycle counts
- Uses a Just-in-Time (JIT) mindset to participate in strategic planning to reduce On-Hand inventory levels
Buying (60%):
- Assists in researching potential vendors
- Plant consumable purchasing
- Purchasing Safety and Office Supplies
- Purchasing insulated glass (IG) Supplies
- Tracks orders and ensures the timely delivery of orders
- Collaborates with Purchasing Leader to evaluate offers from vendors and negotiate better prices
- Follows up with suppliers, as needed, to confirm or change orders
- Conducts market research to identify pricing trends as needed
Administrative (20%):
- Receiving and processing Accounts Payable invoices using 3-way matching
- Updates ERP system with order details including dates, vendors, quantities and discounts
- Maintains updated records of invoices and contracts
- Expedite deliveries, select a freight carrier and the routing on a competitive basis
- Trace shipments as required & monitor critical shipments, as well as provide status updates to the appropriate internal stakeholders
Qualifications (Education, Experience, Training):
- Post-secondary education in Purchasing or Supply Chain or related field
- CSCP, CPIM, SCMP or similar designation ( or working towards) is an asset
- 1-3 years' experience as a Purchasing Assistant or Junior Buyer within a Manufacturing environment
- MRO (Maintenance, Repairs, Operations) purchasing experience an asset
Required Knowledge, Skill And Abilities
- Good understanding of supply chain procedures
- Strong computer skills with an emphasis on MS Office Suite (Excel, Outlook and Word)
- Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously with a focus on customer service and responsiveness
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as a member of a cross functional team
- Ability to follow an established policies and procedures
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate with all levels of the organization
- Proficient in negotiating with vendors and suppliers for best possible outcomes
- Strong ability to be analytical and problem solve
Critical Success Factors
- Conduct research to source new products locally and/or globally that reduce costs
- Build and maintain successful relationships with local and/or global suppliers
- Utilize strategic procurement techniques to achieve significant costs savings for assigned category
- Conduct market research on supplier and vendor rates to increase competitiveness in the supplier community
- Ensure project risks are identified managed to deliver highest possible project success
Working Conditions
This position works primarily in an office environment with occasional time spent within a manufacturing environment.
Standard Office:
- Comfortable indoor area
- Comfortable environment with exposure to some dust, dirt or other conditions which might produce mild discomfort
- Frequent, short periods when it is necessary to pay close attention to the monitoring of sights and sounds
- Moderate mental demands due to one or more conditions, which are present in the job. There may be noticeable pressure from simultaneous priorities and deadlines
Manufacturing Plant:
- Temperature controlled indoor area
- Comfortable environment with exposure to some dust, dirt or other conditions which might produce mild discomfort
- Frequent, short periods when it is necessary to pay close attention to the monitoring of sights and sounds
- Safety sensitive environment with mobile equipment and overhead cranes
- Physically demanding job requiring one to stand for extended periods of time
