Job Description:
The Behavioral Health Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients experiencing mental health or behavioral challenges on their assigned unit. This includes assessing, planning, and implementing individualized care for patients dealing with a range of psychiatric conditions. The nurse offers both direct and indirect support, ensuring a therapeutic environment that promotes mental wellness and stabilization. This role involves active collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to deliver compassionate and effective patient care.
Responsibilities Include:
- Provide direct and indirect patient care for individuals with behavioral health and psychiatric conditions, ensuring safety and emotional support in a therapeutic environment.
- Conduct initial and ongoing mental health assessments to develop individualized care plans based on patients' psychological, emotional, and physical needs.
- Administer medications, monitor side effects, and document patient responses to treatment, coordinating closely with the medical team.
- Implement therapeutic interventions, including crisis prevention and de-escalation techniques, to manage and reduce patients' distress and agitation.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers, including psychiatrists, social workers, and therapists, to deliver holistic care.
- Educate patients and their families on mental health conditions, treatment options, coping strategies, and community resources.
- Maintain accurate, detailed patient records, documenting progress, behavioral changes, and responses to treatments.
- Delegate tasks and supervise support personnel to ensure quality patient care within the unit.
- Adhere to hospital and nursing department standards, following established protocols to promote patient safety and compliance.
- Provide support during challenging situations, offering compassionate care while promoting a respectful, secure environment for patients and staff.
To be considered you’ll need:
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing is required.
- Current license to practice nursing in any US state or Canada (Flint will assist with your license endorsement).
- One or more years of nursing experience in Behavioral Health service is preferred.

- Ensure compliance with infection control and universal precaution policies, promoting a safe and sanitary environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Practice patient safety protocols by utilizing two patient identifiers with each patient interaction, enhancing safety and reducing the risk of errors to maintain a high standard of care.
- Report and address care concerns appropriately, utilizing incident reporting systems and designated channels to communicate issues or recognize excellent care, contributing to a transparent and supportive care environment.
- Perform efficient, accurate triage and prioritize care based on each patient’s behavioral health needs, including physical, psychological, and situational factors that influence patient flow and care urgency.
- Apply behavioral health nursing best practices by demonstrating knowledge of behavioral health nursing practices and procedures, and performing a range of interventions tailored to individual patient needs and situations.
- Exhibit proficiency in crisis intervention and de-escalation, recognizing early signs of escalation and effectively utilizing de-escalation strategies to maintain a safe care environment.
- Deliver comprehensive, compassionate care to patients across varying stages of mental health crises, from initial intake through stabilization, utilizing evidence-based practices to address both physical and psychological needs.
- Demonstrate flexibility, initiative, and responsibility, working effectively with minimal supervision to meet the dynamic needs of patients and the care team in a behavioral health setting.

Pay: $50.81-$75.61 per hour
