The Economics group within RBC Global Asset Management (GAM) has a primary purpose of providing macroeconomic guidance to investment teams collectively managing over $600 billion of client assets, contributing meaningfully to investment returns and client outcomes. The Economics group also engages in marketing activities that include producing research and making presentations for clients.
In the role of Economist, you will work under the direction of the Chief Economist. As a member of the Economics group, your role will consist of conducting research, analyzing data, creating models, contributing to economic forecasting, and communicating those findings to the investment teams and clients via publications and orally. What will you do?
Provide intellectual leadership within the firm, conducting research into key economic themes and risks of relevance to financial markets
Stay abreast of key economic developments, academic and peer research, advances in analytic tools and the availability of new data sources
Organize and analyze economic data with the assistance of software including Macrobond, Bloomberg, EViews, Excel, PowerPoint and new AI tools
Construct and maintain quantitative models to enhance and streamline our forecasting and understanding of the economy
Contribute to the group’s economic forecasting effort via the synthesis of a wide range of inputs
Communicate economic ideas in written and oral form to investment teams and clients across a variety of formal and informal forums
What do you need to succeed?
Must Have
Master’s degree in economics (or related field)
8—15 years of experience as a professional macroeconomist
Strong analytic and quantitative skills including econometrics
A solid understanding of how the economy and capital markets interconnect
Always learning: an insatiable curiosity about the world and how it works
Adapt quickly: a flexible, non-dogmatic mind that can conceive of multiple scenarios and adjust views as circumstances change
Self-starter: must be organized, able to prioritize and to work independently
Good attention to detail and hard worker
Collaborate well with others, including in sharing a macro view
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
PhD in Economics or equivalent
CFA Charter holder or pursuing
Programming skills in Excel VBA, Python and/or Eviews
Experience with non-North American economies (Europe, Japan, China, India, EM)
Fluency in French
Media training and experience
