Job Summary
UBC Botanical Garden is an operational unit within the Faculty of Science. Our Vision is that plants are understood, valued, celebrated a secure in a healthy, biodiverse world. The Mission of the Garden is to assemble, curate, and maintain a documented living collection of temperate plants for the purposes of education, research, conservation, community outreach, and public display.
Organizational Status
The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator reports directly to the Associate Director, Sustainability and Community Programs, and is responsible for the planning, development, and delivery of the Sustainable Communities Field School (Field School).
The Field School is a sustainability education and engagement program that aims to mobilize knowledge, action and networks to advance climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and climate education. The program has 3 goals including (1) adaptation planning for plant conservation in our region, (2) design and development of a biodiversity atlas that will support monitoring and planning, and (3) delivery of climate educational experiences.
The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator is responsible for the development and delivery of the Field School. This position interacts with, and must collaborate across, diverse audiences (Garden staff, students, faculty, government, botanical gardens, and more) in the areas of research, education, engagement, and place-based community development. This includes establishing and enhancing a network of collaborators working on climate adaptation planning and leading efforts to scale climate action and conservation locally and internationally.
The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator will work at UBC Botanical Garden, Vancouver, BC. The position involves some travel to facilitate workshops, give presentations and develop partnerships.

The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator will work closely with Garden staff and the Associate Director, Sustainability and Community Programs. The Coordinator is expected to exercise initiative and good judgment in establishing priorities and conducting day to day administrative and program-related tasks. Major financial matters, partnerships, long-term planning, and large strategic decisions should be brought to the attention of the Associate Director. Errors in judgment or communications could result in reputational damage to UBC Botanical Garden, Faculty of Science and possibly other academic institutions and researchers, with possible consequential financial implications.
Supervision Received
This position offers considerable latitude. Work is reviewed against achievement of tasks and performance objectives identified by the Associate Director Sustainability & Community Programs

The Climate and Conservation Engagement Coordinator oversees the work of students, staff and volunteers as their work relates to the implementation of Field School projects and programs in their portfolio.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Coordinates a 5-year program of research, education and engagement to conserve plants and raise awareness of sustainability, climate solutions, and adaptation.
Manages and maintains relationships with key partners and stakeholders.
Leads outreach around Field School initiatives and supports communications of the program including websites, newsletters, publications, and presentations.
Provides support to Garden staff and Field School partners in planning and delivering sustainability events and activities.
Coordinates budgets, monitoring, and evaluations related to the funding, implementation, and development of the Field School.
Identifies individuals, organizations and networks important to regional adaptation planning (gardens, Indigenous groups, government, universities, NGOs, businesses).
Builds relationships and coordinates meetings across the emerging climate adaptation network.
Researches best practices for climate adaptation education and community-based climate planning.
Identifies opportunities to strengthen the adaptation and conservation community at UBC and beyond.
Develops and hosts climate adaptation workshops.
Researches policies and plans in the region that impact plant adaptation and identifies emerging funding opportunities that support adaptation and plant conservation.
Develops budgets and estimates funding required to implement adaptation plans.
Writes and develops a series of climate adaptation plans that include recommendations for action, conservation, and management activities.
Supports the development and implementation of student-led projects related to adaptation planning and community-building.
Develops a community-based network to advance regional priorities and actions.
Coordinates researchers and students on the planning and design of a biodiversity atlas that supports monitoring and planning for climate adaptation and conservation of plants and biodiversity.
Provides coordination support to develop a tool to support biodiversity conservation and climate adaptation planning including researching examples and best practices.
Responsible for liaising with partners, students, and service providers to generate the biodiversity atlas.
Researches how citizen science can be used to provide new data and information on biodiversity and its responses to climate change.
Coordinates information and data to produce scientific and promotional graphics, imagery, and other communication assets.
Develops engagement initiatives that gain feedback on the tool, as well as promotes the use of the tool to specific audiences.
Responsible for building on established curriculum to develop Field School group learning experiences at the Garden
Responsible for supporting integration of new learning modules (
e.g., climate justice, Indigenous Engagement).
Coordinates staff and students to develop, promote, and deliver educational events, outreach, and workshops.
Coordinates program marketing and promotion in collaboration with staff and external consultants.
Ensures quality program delivery and manages monitoring and evaluation of experiences.
Manages and maintains relationships with key partners and clients.
Support the writing of research proposals and donor reports.
Provides support and guidance to student, staff and volunteers.
Supports overall Field School engagement tracking, program evaluation, and reporting.
Collaborates to design and deliver Field School marketing and communications.
Advises Garden staff on overall Field School strategy and directions.
Understanding of conservation, climate change, and community development.
Excellent research, oral, and written communications skills.
Experience with engagement and facilitation of diverse audiences. This includes planning, managing, and guiding a group to ensure that the group’s objectives are met effectively.
Experience conducting secondary research and creatively communicating findings for a variety of audiences.
Experience leading projects and coordinating teams: a team player and community-builder with strong interpersonal communications skills.
Well-organized: able to work flexibly and independently, handle multiple concurrent priorities, and set and meet reasonable deadlines.
Event planning, coordination, and delivery experience.
