Role Overview
The Safety and Compliance Specialist is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of safety and regulatory compliance for our transportation and logistics operations. This position ensures that the company complies with DOT (Department of Transportation), FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), and MTO (Ministry Of Transportation), while also promoting a culture of safety across all departments.
Key Accountabilities
Safety
- Main point of contact for the escalation of driver safety concerns and issues that arise.
- Regular monitoring of driver performance, ensuring that safe driving practices are being followed and taking opportunities to provide coaching as applicable.
- Facilitating safety related workshops for Drivers on various topics including inspections, fleet safety, and reporting requirements.
- Monitoring of all alerts within the Fleet Management platform (Samsara) on a regular basis.
- Ensuring that all accident reporting is addressed and completed in a timely manner in accordance with Company standards.
- Performing regular audits and inspections on the fleet.
Compliance
- Oversee all Hours of Service (HOS) issues, including assisting with Electronic Logging Devices (ELD's).
- Accountable for the creation of reports related to telematic devices as requested or required.
- Records management including the collection, maintenance and uploading of documents (warning letter, inspection reports, etc.) to the platform (TenStreet).
- Reporting and documentation of all incidents and/or accidents for insurance claims.
- Responsible for pulling Driver Abstracts and CVOR on a quarterly basis.
- Set targets for monthly SMS and CVOR scores aligned with Company expectations and report monthly on actual scores and progress to achieve targets.
- Assisting with creating action plans to achieve targeted SMS and CVOR scores.
- Coordination of random Drug and Alcohol testing for Drivers.
- Maintaining complete and accurate driver binders, conducting periodic audits as applicable.
- Assisting with all required permitting as needed.
Leadership
- Lead a team of Safety Coordinators, including delegating work and playing an active role in team training and development.
- Working closely with the Fleet Manager to achieve department goals, supporting and working on projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a college diploma from a recognized post-secondary educational institution.
- 2+ years’ experience in a Safety and Compliance role, within the transportation and/or logistics industry strongly preferred.
- Proficiency utilizing the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a desire to build and maintain relationships. with corporate and front-line employees.
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Strong organizational skills and a critical focus on attention to detail.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
