We are looking for a Casual Funeral Director’s Assistant to join our team at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Funeral Support
- Work in partnership with Funeral Directors to provide requested services for families (visitations, services, burials, cremations, receptions).
- Assist Funeral Director in conducting funeral services onsite or at offsite locations as requested by families.
- Setup visitation rooms for upcoming visitations and funerals, including arranging furniture, floral tributes, and personal memorabilia.
- Support funeral services by driving company vehicles for processions and transporting flowers as needed.
Facilities & Vehicle Maintenance
- Clean facilities before, during, and after services to restore them to their original condition, including restrooms.
- Ensure company vehicles are presentable and properly maintained, including washing, interior care, and maintenance.
- Assist in general maintenance of company facilities, including garbage collection, mopping, dusting, salting, and snow shoveling.
- Participate in team efforts to maintain supply inventory (caskets, urns, embalming supplies, register books, office supplies) at appropriate levels.

Other Duties
- Perform any aspect of the role at affiliated locations based on business needs.
- Transfer human remains from various locations within the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
- Handle and lift caskets carefully during transfers.
- Maintain physical item tracking of bodies, personal effects, and cremation-related items in company software system.
- Confirm identification of human remains being transferred and record relevant information.
- Obtain Coroner’s Cremation Certificates and register deaths as required.
- Additional duties, and tasks that fall within the scope of the role as assigned by the Assistant Manager and Manager, Funeral Operations.
Hours/Days of work:
- This is an on-call position
- Days, afternoons, nights and weekends
- Shifts are typically 4-8 hours, sometimes longer
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or at least one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- A valid Ontario “G” driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract
- Previous experience is an asset
- Must consent to and pass a Criminal Background check, and a Criminal Record
- Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times
- Physical manual labour required, must be able to lift in work safe guidelines
- Knowledge of hospitals, nursing homes, cemeteries, crematoria, and mausoleums within the GTA
- Familiarity with funeral home environment and internal policies and procedures.
- Sensitivity to persons in bereavement and understanding a variety of cultural and religious funeral expectations
- Intermediate proficiency of Windows and MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
- Familiarity with funeral home environment and internal policies and procedures is an asset
