Qualifications:
- Degree in a recognized Therapeutic Recreation program or a degree/diploma in Gerontology or equivalent
- Able to read, write and communicate effectively in English
- Demonstrates computer skills
- Able to perform physical work
- Fun to be with, energetic, positive, organized, sensitive, patient, tactful and mature
- Demonstrates initiative
- Must be able to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with staff, students, volunteers, residents and families
- Experience in planning, organizing, and managing therapeutic programs
- Current certification in First Aid and CPR
- Dementia knowledge and familiarity with Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA)
- Understanding of Judaic culture, tradition and values
- Ability to be self-directed, set priorities and adjust to changing conditions relating to both the residents and the environment
The Recreationist carries out the following functions:
- Develops, plans, evaluates and adjusts activity programs for the Elder Street residents in conjunction with the Director of Resident and Family Relations and other recreationists on the team
- Provides therapeutic assessment and treatment and implements therapeutic behavioural interventions and strategies as reflected in the R.E.S.T. philosophy, attends weekly case conferences, mentors with the Director of Resident and Family Relations, reviews Key Highlights and prepares semi-annual care plans for each resident as required
- Provides direct service in specific one-on-one situations, group activities, and outings external to the facility
- Prepares and provides snacks, facilitates “Tea Time” and assists in feeding residents as required
- Has familiarity with residents’ social histories, physical abilities and behaviours, spiritual life styles, important memories and losses, family dynamics and contacts, dietary requirements and language abilities
- Creates a relaxed, enjoyable and entertaining environment. Assumes responsibility for the morale and well-being of the residents
- Communicates with each resident daily
- Is open to feedback and constructive criticism
- Works collaboratively with the staff
- Has knowledge of infection control practices
- Carries out other duties as assigned
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $22.66 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 37.5 per week
