VMA offers an Early Years program for Toddler and Pre-Kindergarten students (18 months-4 years) that operates year-round, and a Private School for Kindergarten-Grade 6 students. At VMA, small classroom sizes and consistent groups are prioritized across all programs to create an intimate, engaging, and supportive environment where children can thrive. Our programs are run at two Campuses (68 Daisy Ave and 432 Horner Ave), both conveniently located in South Etobicoke.
The Role
VMA is inviting applications for the full-time position of a Behavioural and Cirriculum Consulant. In this role, you will foster a supportive, inclusive, and academically enriching learning environment for all students. This position combines expertise in behavior management, curriculum development, and family engagement while providing additional support for technology and library resources.
The successful candidate will have experience and be comfortable working with students across all programs (Toddler-Grade 6) between our Campuses. This position is a 1-year contract, with the possibility of extension upon successful contract completion.
What You'll Do
Core responsibilities in this position will largely be divided into behavioural support and management, and curriculum development with both the Early Years and Day School program.
Behavioral Support and Management
- Conduct comprehensive behavioural assessments at the start of the school year to identify student needs and establish intervention priorities in both Early Years and Day School Programs
- Develop, assess, and monitor Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Behavioural Support Plans for students requiring specialized behavioral support and learning support. Collaborate with teachers and families to ensure effective and consistent implementation of strategies.
- Observe classroom programs both individually and in collaboration with the program Supervisor. Offer actionable guidance to teachers on managing behaviours and enhancing student engagement.
- Provide targeted assistance in Early Years classrooms, aligning strategies with developmental milestones, benchmarks, and VMA's educational philosophy
- Design and implement school-wide behavioral systems in alignment with VMA's mission and values
- Promote positive reinforcement techniques to foster essential skills like critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability in students
- Provide immediate support during behavioral crises to maintain a safe and structured environment
- Train staff in de-escalation methods and conflict resolution strategies to equip them with effective behavioral management skills
- Systematically track and analyze behaviour-related data to identify trends, evaluate intervention outcomes, and make data-driven decisions.
Cirriculum Development, Implementation, and Evaluation
- Ensure regular administration of Acadience and other literacy assessment tools to track student progress and identify areas for improvement
- Deliver targeted reading interventions within classrooms to support literacy goals and enhance students' reading proficiency. Provide tailored support to ensure students meet their developmental benchmarks.
- Develop and implement innovative math programs aimed at improving student learning outcomes across all grade levels
- Oversee the coordination and administration of regular academic assessments for literacy and numeracy across all grades, ensuring a progressive and supportive framework
- Utilize tools such as Acadience and other standardized benchmarks to monitor and analyze student progress, providing actionable insights to educators and families.
- In conjunction with the Program Supervisor, create monthly meeting notes to discuss during the Early Years team meetings to review your monthly insights and tools. Offer resources, strategies, and expert guidance to support literacy and math development in their program.
- Develop resources and presentations as needed, and present to the teams during Professional Development Days in both Early Years and Day School programs
- Continuously review and refine instructional tools to ensure alignment with developmental goals, classroom needs, and VMA's educational philosophy
- Oversee and review progress reports for accuracy and completeness
- Implement a curriculum with clear objectives and themes for each age group, ensuring a comprehensive foundation for student success. This will include:
- Outdoor Education: Integrate outdoor learning opportunities that emphasize exploration, teamwork, and environmental awareness.
- Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Embed SEL practices within the curriculum to promote emotional intelligence, resilience, and positive interpersonal skills
- FNMI Curriculum: Incorporate perspectives, teachings, and traditions from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities to ensure inclusivity and cultural awareness
- Diversity and Inclusion: Develop initiatives for Pride Month and Black History Month, providing meaningful learning experiences that celebrate diversity and equity
- Technology and Coding: Introduce and expand opportunities for technology and coding, preparing students for future-ready skills in a digital landscape
Communication and Collaboration with Families
- Actively collaborate with families to address behavioral challenges by aligning strategies and interventions between the home and school environments. Develop consistent support for student development in both academics and behaviours.
- Schedule and conduct regular meetings with families to review students' progress. These meetings provide opportunities to share observations, discuss academic achievements and behavioral concerns, and offer actionable recommendations for improvement.
- Work closely with school-based professionals, including counselors, psychologists, and special education staff, to create and implement comprehensive support plans tailored to individual student needs
- Partner with external agencies or professionals, such as therapists, social workers, or medical specialists, when additional expertise or resources are required to support students
Miscellaneous Responsibilities
- Oversee the management and inventory of student technology (tablets, computers, user accounts, etc.)
- Troubleshoot technology issues for students and staff
- Curate thematic library displays and resources in the learning commons, classrooms, and general areas of each Campus
- Manage inventory of learning commons, replacing outdated or damaged materials
- Oversee the development and implementation of social justice initiatives, including Orange Shirt Day, Black History Month, and Pride Month. At the end of each event, solicit feedback from teachers, management, and families to evaluate and further improve justice-oriented education
- Continually updating, reviewing, and organizing Google Drive, Dropbox, and Canva documents
- Develop and communicate newsletters, calendars, and relevant documentation
What You'll Need
- A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and a Bachelor's of Education, registration to the Ontario College of Teachers with Good Standing, and Primary/Junior teaching qualification
or
A Master's Degree in a relevant field and registration as a Behaviour Analyst with Registration to College of Psychologists and Behvaiour Analysts of Ontario
- Minimum of 5 full years of Teaching experience in your own classroom
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the development of behaviour management programs with a wide range of children’s needs
- A Specialist qualification with the OCTs is considered a strong asset
- Familiarity with the operations of licensed child-care programs in Ontario
- Experience with Microsoft Suite, Google Drive, and Dropbox
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills
- Ability to foster and develop professional relationships with families, teachers, and internal and external support workers
- Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on team building and demonstrated conflict resolution skills
- Fully immunized with a Health Canada-recognized COVID-19 vaccine
- Current and clear Vulnerable Sector Check within 6 months from your start date, or willing to receive one
- Standard First Aid/CPR C certification
