Why choose to join the UBC Chinese Language Program?
For CLP volunteers themselves, besides getting real work experience to enrich their resume, CLP is also a platform for all committed volunteers to develop and enhance their abilities and skills critical to their future study and career:
- Interpersonal communication abilities: Effective and efficient communication among students, fellow volunteers, and instructors is one of the essential foundations for the successful completion of CLP volunteer work. Volunteers need to articulate their own thoughts and understand others, which is a practical way to develop interpersonal communication abilities. For instance, during OP Training, volunteers will learn techniques of effective communication to be used in discussions with students to promote positive intercultural conversations.
- Teamwork skills: Every volunteer is expected to be a team player in all assigned volunteering tasks. Volunteers collaborate and cooperate with individuals from diverse backgrounds to achieve each task's goals. Through volunteering with CLP, volunteers can learn teamwork skills. For instance, volunteers of the events team may plan and execute events together in a group setting and gain relevant skills and experience.
- Abilities and skills to think critically and work independently: Even though volunteers normally work as team members, there are situations in which they themselves need to find relevant resources and the best solution. These are opportunities for them to think critically and work independently.
- Excellent work ethics: CLP adheres to high ethical and professional standards. In this work environment, volunteers are committed to their work, strive for excellence, and treat each other with respect.
